Kelly Clarkson - Empty As I Am

For a minute there, it seemed like we were thisclose to seeing Kelly Clarkson sink her teeth into the Twilight saga—”Did You,” from the My December sessions, was briefly rumored to be an addition to the soundtrack for sequel New Moon. It didn’t happen, but now it turns out the self-proclaimed “nerd Twilight fan” actually wrote a song specifically with New Moon in mind, and not because she was hired to, but because she’s obsessed with Stephenie Meyer’s books. You’ve got to love a girl who’s willing to own up to her guilty pleasures. Check out the sweet-but-sad track “Empty As I Am” behind the jump, along with Kelly waxing poetic about the Twi books:

Kelly talked with MYX about being a vamp geek and writing the song with her backup singers:

“I’m a nerd Twilight fan. I wrote it, it was about New Moon, and it was before they were actually looking for songs… we were nerds and loved the book so much and wrote the song. It’s a really sad book… its the one where she gets left behind, a Romeo and Juliet tragic kind of thing.”

We imagine that if Clarkson was totally into the Harry Potter series, instead of Twilight, we’d probably be listening to a tune about Quiddich and battling the Voldemort within. But as it stands, she’s totally Team Edward, so let’s have a listen to her song, written from the perspective of the lovesick Bella:

Kelly Clarkson - Empty As I Am (Click here and then scroll down to this link to play song.)

Since this is a rough recording of “Empty As I Am” (which appears to be grabbed from a soundcheck) it’s tough to really know how a studio-produced track would sound. But the simple melodies in the acoustic version definitely capture the bummed-out, longing mood of New Moon, so it’s too bad it didn’t wind up on the equally gloomy—but rock-critic-friendly— soundtrack. If we’re lucky, Kelly will still cut a studio version sooner or later. And hey, there’s always the Eclipse soundtrack to set her sights on (which we dearly hope also includes these guys).

Ashley Shares Her Own "Fairytale" Prom Story

Just last month, Ashley Greene was out celebrating her sultry Maxim cover, now she's back on the newsstands, with a glammed up look for TeenPROM 2010.

The "New Moon" star is gracing the cover of the magazine in an elegant purple dress with a bow and embroidery in the front, for a feature story spotlighting her role as spokesperson for DonateMyDress.org, a charity which distributes used prom dresses to underprivileged teens. In the issue, Ashley shares her prom story and dishes out some good advice for the big night. Of course, she also manages to sneak in a few "Twilight" bits.

The actress, who is no doubt busy prepping to reprise her role as Alice Cullen in "Eclipse," the next installment in the "Twilight" series, got involved with DonateMyDress.org because of her own experience trying to save up for prom.

"I bought my dress and I pretty much paid for everything because my parents really didn’t have the money to pay for something like that. I worked for it, so I think it meant that much more to me because I had to save up," she tells Prom2010.

In the end, Ashley put together enough to buy a fitted full-length dress with bronze and gold sequins and a plunging neckline (her mom made her cover-up with a shawl). She has since donated the dress to the charity. "I had my prom dress forever until I became a part of the charity and donated it," says Ashley. "It’s amazing to see girls’ faces light up [when given a dress]. It’s really fun because I get to interact with these girls and share the experience with them."

As for her big night, Ashley says it turned out perfect. "I went with my high school sweetheart and had a blast. I had that fairytale prom everyone talks about. It’s something I’ll remember forever."

Now, Ashley's hoping to help other young girls have their fairytale night with some choice words of advice. "Definitely plan ahead because the actual day can be kind of stressful. Planning everything out helps a lot," she says, adding that its also a good idea to pick out a dress you can easily dance and move around in.

Most importantly though, Ashley says it's key to stay true to your personal style when picking out a dress and makeup — even if you're tempted to go overboard. "Be yourself and don’t overdo it. People have a lot of anticipation for an event like prom and end up overdoing it or wearing too much makeup. Really make sure you are comfortable because then you’ll feel beautiful, instead of going overboard and asking yourself, ‘Oh my gosh, what did I do?’"

While charity work seems to be top on the 22-year-old actress' priority list lately (she recently filmed a PSA to fight global poverty), Ashley also manages to dish some details on what it was like to shoot "New Moon". "With 'Twilight', I was just so nervous and new. I didn’t know what to expect," Ashley tells the magazine. "With 'New Moon', we had [already] portrayed these characters and the fans responded to the movie and loved it.

"Also, Alice’s part became more pivotal. I got to do some action, and basically guided Bella through the whole second half of the film. I was so thankful that it happened in the second movie because I’m not sure I could have handled it in the first one."

One of the things she helped guide Bella through in the first movie? Getting ready for prom, of course! We've got a feeling Ash didn't need much direction when it came to filming that scene...

What do you think of Ashley's TeenPROM cover and inside pics?

Another Action-Movie Roll for Taylor

According to a Variety report, "Twilight Saga: New Moon" star Taylor Lautner is set to star in an untitled project described as a teenage version of "Taken."

Lautner's father, Dan Lautner, will be a producer for the film, the first under their Tailor Made Entertainment label, which they formed to produce movie and TV projects.

In the film, Taylor will play an elite military soldier discharged after an injury. He goes to college, and joins some friends on a trip to Cancun. When his companions are kidnapped, he takes the law into his own hands and stages a rescue attempt.

This news comes a week after the 18-year-old Grand Rapids-born actor hosted "Saturday Night Live," and two weeks after he signed on for superhero film "Max Steel."

Taylor's schedule isn't likely to have any gaps soon - "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse," the third film in the series, wrapped a few weeks ago, and will be released in June, while principal photography for the adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's fourth "Twilight" book "Breaking Dawn" (which will likely be split into two films) is slated for late 2010.

He will also star in Garry Marshall's ensemble comedy "Valentine's Day," slated for a February release.

First Movie Still From 'Eclipse'

From Examiner.com:

Twilight fans are just getting their breath back from the whirlwind frenzy incited by the release of The Twilight Saga: New Moon, but it looks like Summit plans to keep the excitement going. Consider it an early Christmas gift: Summit has released the first still from Eclipse!

The still features Edward and Bella in what appears their meadow (anyone know where a meadow like that exists in real life because it sure is pretty!). They look serious and brooding, as always. Is he trying to convince her to marry him or to not become a vampire?

Eclipse will be released on June 30, 2010. After that, who knows when fans will get their next dose of The Twilight Saga? No final plans have been put in place to film Breaking Dawn, the final installment of the series, but given the enormous success of New Moon, it's not a matter of "if" but "when."

Taylor ~ "Fittest Male Celeb of 2009"

Having bulked up with an extra thirty pounds of muscle for The Twilight Saga: New Moon, Taylor Lautner is nothing if not fit.

His physical fitness landed him the continued job as Jacob Black in New Moon and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, a role as a football player swoonstar in Valentine's Day, a part in Max Steel, and - most recently - a one-track start on the road to action hero.

He's been on the cover of Men's Health, Rolling Stone, he's hosted a segment of Saturday Night Live, and he's been the whispered candidate for the next Armani push.

Today, Lautner was named FitSugar's "Fittest Male Celeb of 2009."

The win was based on a poll taken of readers, and Lautner scored nearly half of all the votes submitted.

Of course, Lautner's six (twelve?) pack went unnoticed by no viewer of New Moon, so it's not terribly surprising he'd get the bid.

So, do you agree? Is Taylor Lautner the "Fittest Male Celeb of 2009"? Why or why not?

Eclipse Coming to IMAX Theaters

From AceShowBiz.com:

"The Twilight Saga's Eclipse" is going to be the first of "Twilight" film series which gets an IMAX treatment. The IMAX Corporation and Summit Entertainment have just announced that they will join forces to digitally remaster the upcoming film using the IMAX DMR technology.

" 'Twilight' moviegoers will have a whole new way to experience this next installment of the series," Summit's president of domestic theatrical distribution Richie Fay stated. "['Eclipse' will feature] the enhanced image and sound quality of the IMAX Experience, putting them in the movie. The IMAX release puts us on the event film calendar for 2010, and we're very excited to work with IMAX to bring a new kind of film to the IMAX theater network."

"Eclipse" has been said to be the most action-packed novel in Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" saga. In fact, the actress of the third "Twilight" film franchise, Ashley Greene, previously claimed David Slade has directed the film to be "gorier and a little dark and kind of dramatic..." with a lot more focus on action.

"The Twilight Saga's Eclipse" will follow Bella Swan, who once again finds herself being surrounded by danger. Knowing that her decision has the potential to ignite the ageless struggle between vampire and werewolf, she is forced to choose between her love for Edward Cullen and her friendship with Jacob Black.

The lead stars, Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner, will all return to reprise their roles as Edward, Bella, and Jacob respectively. The film is scheduled to be released both on IMAX screens and in traditional movie theaters across the U.S. on June 30, 2010.

Rob's Dream Job

New Moon actor Robert Pattinson has admitted his 'dream job' was to be a musician.

The 23-year-old star plays the role of dreamy vampire Edward Cullen in the hit Twilight Saga but said that music is his first passion.

He said to UK magazine Company: 'The acting thing happened by accident, a fluke. What I wanted to be was a musician, and play the piano in bars. I wanted to go to Nice and play on the beach in a tuxedo.

'I thought that was cool. It's such a romantic idea. All you have is your one tuxedo [laughs]. That was my dream job growing up. I haven't written any songs for a while though.'

The actor, who is rumoured to be dating his Twilight co-star Kristen Stewart (side note from OTC ~ which we believe to be false!!), was asked what is still in his room at his parents' house.

He said: 'What does it have in it? I think I had a poster of Kate Moss in there. I had posters of Linda Blair [from The Exorcist] and Kate Moss!'

What do you think of Rob's music? Should he pursue it or just keep his day job ~ or do both?

Bryce Talks "Extraordinary" Eclipse Finale

Bryce Dallas Howard (Associated Press photo)

Actress Bryce Dallas Howard, daughter of Oklahoma native Ron Howard, is promising an “extraordinary” ending to the next “Twilight” film, 2010’s “Eclipse.”

Howard, who takes over the role of vampire baddie Victoria in “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” told MTV News that weeks of extensive fighting training was needed to prepare for the sequel’s big final battle.

“There’s quite an extraordinary finale,” Howard told MTV News. “That was very fun to do.”

In “Eclipse,” the love triangle among human Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), her good-hearted vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) and Bella’s werewolf BFF Jacob (Taylor Lautner) intensifies. Meanwhile, Victoria creates a vampire army to kill Bella and avenge the death of her mate James (Cam Gigandet) in “Twilight.”

According to MTV, Howard was careful not to reveal too much about the third film, but she did say that the “Eclipse” battle is the grandest in the franchise so far.

“The producers were saying it’s the biggest spectacle filmed thus far in this franchise,” she said. “There’s a newborn army that’s been raised for battle. It’s a true battle scene.”

Howard replaces Rachelle Lefevre, who played Victoria in “Twilight” and this fall’s sequel “The Twilight Saga: New Moon.” An apparent scheduling dispute prevented Lefevre from reprising the role.

Robert is #6 on MTV News' Man of the Year

6. Robert Pattinson

In 2009, all eyes were on RPattz. Despite only releasing one movie, there were few people whose face sold more magazines, whose every word made more of a ripple and whose public appearances caused such a stir. Under such pressure, a lot of 23-year-old actors would end up getting into trouble, indulging to the point of excess and disappointing their fans. But somehow, the uniquely suited-for-stardom Robert Pattinson took it all with a good-natured grin and self-deprecating charm. In "Twilight" and beyond, his future seems so bright that he'll likely be sparkling for quite some time.

2009 Highlights: We all know Rob had a busy 2009, and everybody had their own thoughts on what he should do after "Twilight." Few saw his first move coming, however, as he dropped out of the indie flick "Parts Per Billion," leaving producer/star Rosario Dawson sad but promising the show would go on. In February, he showed up at the Oscars and stole attention away from stars as big as Brad and Angelina. Despite expressing fears that he might become "Twilighted out" while shooting "New Moon" and "Eclipse" back-to-back, he nevertheless got back to work as Edward Cullen.

At the MTV Movie Awards, Rob unveiled a new trailer from "New Moon," Kristen Stewart left him longing for a cold shower, and he cracked up watching KStew fumble her trophy. During an exclusive interview, he promised that "New Moon" would look "amazing." Rob later returned for the Video Music Awards alongside Kristen and Taylor Lautner and helped raise eyebrows with their fashionable duds.

Despite rumors that his reduced screen presence in "New Moon" would keep him away, Rob made a surprise appearance at San Diego's Comic-Con to show off footage from the movie, reflect on a hallucinating Bella and hang out with the geeks. Things sure were a lot different than they were a year ago — even if Rob insisted he's stayed the same.

In the midst of all the hype, rumors and insanity, Rob actually managed to make movement on some non-"Twilight" movies in 2009. His romantic drama "Remember Me," opposite Emilie de Ravin, had a memorable time shooting in New York, which appears to have left him brooding after that time he was almost killed by a taxi — or barely grazed, depending on whom you ask. He also signed on to "Unbound Captives," a western co-starring Rachel Weisz that offered Rob the chance to play a character who "can't really be more different from Edward." He also signed on to "Bel Ami," a film that pits him opposite Uma Thurman as a "totally immoral character."

But all that paled in comparison to when he hit the "New Moon" premiere, looking fashionable as he greeted the fans and talked about the good and bad parts of being, well, him. Fans freaked out when he hit the Hot Topic tour opening night, and in a very revealing Rough Cut with MTV News, he spoke about his lack of endorsement deals, why "New Moon" is his favorite "Twilight" book, what he loves about Kristen and Edward's annoying habit of parking his Volvo across multiple parking spaces.

To make a long story short, "New Moon" had a record-shattering opening and became one of the biggest films of 2009. Now, with Taylor Lautner hosting "Saturday Night Live," we continue to hope that RPattz can't be far behind — so let the guy write a sketch already! Edward might be a jerk, but of all the dudes who hang out in our office on a regular basis, Rob will always remain our favorite seasonal vegetable.

Twilight Poster Thefts at Burger King

Okay, this is just ridiculous. Come on people!

From TheSkiChannel.com:

While we know that "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" opening was damaging to the ski resort industry, but now another business is taking the Twilight hit, as the film's stars continue to cause folks to act a little crazy.

First, people were doing the unthinkable - ditching powder days - in favor of taking in screenings of "New Moon," and now it appears the Twilight craze has invoked the inner criminal tendencies of numerous 'Twi-Hards.'

Fast-food chain, Burger King, has been reporting widespread, rampant thefts of their life-size posters featuring "New Moon" cast-members Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner. As many as three different states have seen their posters targeted, and additional reports keep piling in.

Rabid teenage girls have been using their quick, youthful legs to run up to store windows (often in broad day-light) and perform the old "smash and grab," minus the whole smashing part. So far, Burger King claims they have no leads to any of the suspects.

For the sake of Twilight fans everywhere, I just hope a hero like Max Steel can waltz in to save the day, so the public can continue to enjoy the sex appeal of Pattinson and Lautner, even while grabbing a "Whopper."

Taylor Lautner to Host SNL on 12/12

NBC announced that Taylor Lautner — Kristen Stewart’s favorite werewolf in “New Moon” — will host “Saturday Night Live” Dec. 12, with Bon Jovi as musical guest.

Twi-hards and haters alike remember that Lautner's girlfriend, Taylor Swift, spoofed “Twilight” with Bill Hader when she hosted last month. Here's hoping the other Taylor will try to top that.

Other December guests: Blake Lively and Rihanna this Saturday, and James Franco and “Twilight” soundtrack stars Muse Dec. 19.

Possible Twilight TV????

From Straightstimes.com:

LOS ANGELES - BRITISH actor and star of the Twilight film franchise is reportedly in talks with Summit Entertainment regarding a TV spin-off, according to Contactmusic magazine.

The actor, who plays vampire Edward Cullen in the films, could earn almost S$2.03 million per episode if the Twilight story moves over to the small screen, reported entertainment media on Wednesday.

According to a report in the Daily Telegraph newspaper, producers want to maximise the films' popularity by launching the television series next year after the release of the third movie in the franchise, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, in June next year.

The recently released New Moon, the second in the series, has grossed more than S$319 million in 10 days since its premiere in the US.

What are your thoughts? Do you want Twilight to be a TV series??

Kristen Talks About Tabloids & Bryce Dallas's 'Scary' Acting in Eclipse

From Hollywoodcrush.MTV.com:

I imagine the first day on a movie set is a lot like the first day of school. There's all the last-minute summer reading (memorizing the script), meeting new classmates (your costars) and the hours of hair and makeup (okay, maybe not that last one). But thanks to a special touch from director Chris Weitz, the "New Moon" set felt even more scholarly — in a good way. "Twilight Saga" star Kristen Stewart sat down with MTV Radio recently and talked about the director's teacherly approach to filming, working with newcomer Bryce Dallas Howard and the media scrutiny.

"Chris did a very different thing that I've never had a director do," the 19-year-old explained. "He put together a syllabus of what we were supposed to achieve and how he was going to make it easier for everyone — sort of an introduction to how he likes to work. It not only introduced the idea of collaboration but said, 'Please, everyone, love it and be invested and work hard.' It was very encouraging. It had technical aspects of [the shoot] — how he was so sorry that so much of the movie was going to be CGI stuff that we would have to react to — but that he was going to always make us aware of what we were acting with and never leave us high and dry like a lot of effects movies [do], because you don't know what you're reacting to. It was a full rundown of how he planned on making the movie. Most directors are like, 'Have you put together notes for our meeting?' and it's like, 'No. That's your job.' "

With "New Moon" already a box office smash in its first few weeks, Kristen also turned her gaze towards next year's "Eclipse," dishing about working with Bryce Dallas Howard, who took over the role of Victoria from Rachelle Lefevre. "It was really good [working with her]," Kristen said. "Bryce is scary. She is really oddly sweet as well, so it's weird to see her switch back and forth. Victoria, for Bella, is an ever-present fear — even when Victoria isn't around, she is scared that she is coming back. Bryce is such a good actress, and it was easy to be scared of her."

And, of course, no KStew interview would be complete without the requisite tabloid talk. But Kristen mustered a much more diplomatic response than the one she gave Entertainment Weekly last month. "I've gotten more comfortable with it," Kristen said of the media attention. "And the whole rumor/tabloid stuff, it's so obviously false to me. Even before I became a part of it, once I was sort of the star of that, it's like a show; it's like a ridiculous show. With false realism, like a soap opera that seems real, but you're not quite sure. It doesn't bother me; I don't take it personally."

Plagiarism Suit Against Stephenie Meyer Dismissed

From: AllHeadlineNews.com:

Anne Lu - Celebrity News Service News Writer
Los Angeles, CA (CNS) - The plagiarism lawsuit filed against "Twilight" mastermind Stephenie Meyer has been dismissed. A Los Angeles judge ruled that author Jordan Scott's "The Nocturne" has little in common with the bestselling sequel "Breaking Dawn."

Scott filed a suit against Meyer, alleging her own 2006 novel bears striking similarity to the 2008 novel "Breaking Dawn," the fourth book in the hit "Twilight" series.

She sent a cease and desist letter to the publishers of Meyer's book, Hachette Books, seeking damages from the purported plagiarism.

On Thursday, Judge Otis D. Wright II called Scott's claims "deceptive," saying she "twice manipulated aspects of the subject works in order to create the appearance of similarity."

He added that the two works have little in common and the characters are vastly different.

Taylor as Max Steel?

From EW.com:

The L.A. Times is reporting that reps for Taylor Lautner are looking at Paramount’s Max Steel as a possible project for the Twilight heartthrob. Based on the Mattel toys that came out in 2001, the movie tells the story of a teenage superhero. Lautner would star as Josh McGrath, an athlete who is exposed to nanotechological machines and gets super-human powers from them. The script from J.P. Lavin and Chad Damiani is still being written.

Lautner’s publicist did not immediately respond to EW’s request for comment.

MTV's Suggestions On How to Make Eclipse Appeal to a Wider Audience

While "New Moon" has certainly accrued fan approval and box office power since its release on November 20, critics haven't had the same appreciation for the vampire romance. "Eclipse," the next in the series, wrapped in October and is slated for a June 30, 2010 release, we have a few suggestions to help make it a film everyone -- not just Twilighters -- will enjoy.

Amp up the Bella and Edward romance
"Twilight" established the potent romance between Bella and Edward, but "New Moon" sacrificed much of the chemistry for the sake of Bella's growing bond with Jacob. Granted, the reason why Edward was mostly absent during "New Moon" was because he broke up with Bella and was moping around in an apartment for months on end, but Chris Weitz forgot to reestablish why exactly Bella and Edward were so in love. With "Eclipse," we hope David Slade explores their connection, especially with so many fans jumping ship to Team Jacob after seeing Taylor Lautner's abs.

Expand the secondary characters
Even though Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner are the biggest draws for most fans, secondary characters like Anna Kendrick's Jessica, Mike Welch's Mike Newton, Dakota Fanning's Jane and Michael Sheen's Aro were key to some of the most fun parts of "New Moon." "Eclipse" introduces a whole slew of new characters (Riley and Leah, anyone?) and we hope some of the old favorites aren't sacrificed for the new, especially with Anna Kendrick's potential Oscar win for "Up in the Air." Plus, there's the fact that the scenes in which Bella interacts with humans (like her father, played by Billy Burke, and the high school students) are some of the most interesting and well-acted in the series thus far.

Make the fight scenes more action-packed
Yes, we understand that a lot of care went into making the CGI werewolves in "New Moon," and thank goodness the fight scenes in the second "Twilight" installment were better than the first, but the final battle in "Eclipse" is the most action-packed part of the entire "Twilight Saga." With David Slade's previous vampire film "30 Days of Night" under his belt, we can expect some intense action, but we'd like to remind him we want to see some newborn vamps being torn limb from limb anyways (and not just in slow motion).

Make the film more appealing to a non-"Twilight" audience
There are a lot of elements in "Eclipse" that could attract an audience not made up solely of Twilighters. In "New Moon," there was no effort spent on setting up the story from the previous book or explaining why Bella and Edward are so in love. "Eclipse" was the book that made Stephenie Meyer's vampire series what it is today, and hopefully "Eclipse" the movie will break the film series out to a larger audience as well.

Have fun with it
Some of the best parts of "New Moon" were when screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg and director Chris Weitz let loose and had fun with the film. "Face Punch," anyone? (This I consider a stroke of genius. I expect a "Face Punch" movie poster for Chanukah.) Flying Virgin America to Italy? Jessica's commentary on zombie films? If "Eclipse" doesn't take itself too seriously and doesn't hold itself too close to the book, it could turn out to be not only a great movie for "Twilight" fans, but a great film in general.

Do you agree with MTV? What would you add/delete?

Kellan Raves About His New Adopted Dog

Another great story from one of our Twilight stars. This time, it's Kellan:

From Aceshowbiz.com:

Film hunk Kellan Lutz showed off his softer side when revealing to Us Weekly at the Art of Progress event in Miami on Monday, November 30 that he has just adopted a dog. "I found a stray on the street. He's like a little Chihuahua that all the neighbors were into," he said about the dog, whom he names Kevin.

When asked on how he finds Kevin, the Emmett Cullen of "Twilight" recalled, "I don't know why, but he just lay on the street and acted dead and all these cars drove around him." He then added, "I'm going home to Arizona, which I only get to do once a year. So I'm taking him to Arizona, too."

Kellan Lutz, who reprises his role as Emmett Cullen in the recently released "The Twilight Saga's New Moon", is quite open with the press when it comes to non-acting issues. Among the things that he has discussed publicly include his love life, big lips, crazy encounters with fans, and also the secret to his buff body.

Why New Moon's box-office success is good for everyone

From Guardian.co.uk: The Twilight sequel, which held on to the US box-office crown for a second consecutive week, has given the independent sector a genuine shot in the arm

Still No 1 … Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in Twilight Saga: New Moon

The winner
New Moon by a whisker. In its second weekend, Summit Entertainment's vampire saga just about held on to the North American box-office crown, thanks to an estimated $42.5m (£25.7m) three-day haul over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend that boosted the running total to $230.7m. This was only a few million dollars ahead of Warner Bros' true-life tale The Blind Side, which held firm in second place and delivered $40.1m to propel Sandra Bullock to her second $100m movie of the year after rom-com The Proposal and the fifth of her career (six if you include her voice part in The Prince of Egypt). It's been quite a year for La Bullock.

Still, the weekend belonged once again to New Moon as the Twihards made themselves heard and reiterated the might of female moviegoers. New Moon eased past the $200m mark in its eighth day of release and has already soared past the $192.3m final tally of Twilight, which took 20 weeks to get there. How much further can New Moon go? None of the new releases coming up on Friday are in the same genre, romantic vampire franchises being a relatively rare beast, so it should stick around in the top 10 for a few more weeks. A final result of at least $275m would seem within reach and $300m is by no means out of the question.

The loser
New Moon's box office dropped 70%, which wasn't a big surprise bearing in mind that it was never going to match last weekend's huge launch. However, to use this metric as the sole determinant of success or otherwise seems churlish in this case because New Moon is massive. There wasn't really a loser this weekend.

The real story
The significance of New Moon's heavyweight performance – it's grossed $474m worldwide in less than two weeks – cannot be understated. At a time when the independent sector is overcrowded and perilous, a success story like this provides a welcome boost to everyone. Producers, financiers and distributors will remain committed when they are reminded that there is the potential for quality non-studio fare to deliver the kind of blockbuster results that we're used to seeing from the Warner Bros and Sonys of this world.

It's a similar story overseas, too. Summit's well established international sales division licensed rights to New Moon all over the world and the movie's runaway success sends out a message to international distributors that independent cinema made at a price with high-value elements (cast, script, director, production values) can prosper. It's a message that goes a long way towards sustaining a vibrant international marketplace, which is vital in these uncertain times. It would be remiss to think of the overseas market as an arena defined solely by risk-averse banks and cash-strapped film-makers: the growing success of local-language movies from all over the world and emerging entertainment powerhouses in Asia, Latin America and eastern Europe will only benefit from the story of Bella Swan and Edward Cullen.......
